How are your children enjoying their summer break? I know mine are always on the lookout for new activities to keep occupied. When school is not is session, parents also look for additional outlets to educate and entertain. This week we will give some local summer activity options that inspire kids to have fun and be creative.
Central Florida is well known for its theme parks, however in the hot summer sun, it is nice to also be aware of the area’s water parks. Disney has two water parks on property. The first of these is Typhoon Lagoon. Legend has it an incredible storm carried the shipwrecks here to Central Florida, and brought this beach-themed destination to life. Disney’s second water park is Blizzard Beach, where guests will find the theming similar to a ski resort, but with Florida temperatures rather than frozen water. Sea World’s Aquatica is a water park the whole family will enjoy. While there, guests may even experience unique animal encounters. For those looking for more adventure, Discovery Cove, also located at Sea World, allows guests to interact with dolphins. Wet’ n Wild on International Drive is currently offering Florida residents half off after 5:00 p.m. This pass is good from now until August 20, 2016. It costs $29.00, with restrictions, and prices are subject to change. Next year, we look forward to the opening of Universal Studios water park, Volcano Bay.
Many communities are offering public Splash Pads which are open during the summer months. These outdoor water facilities provide children with a fun, safe area to cool down and play. Splash pads offer a low cost, local option to parents, while still providing kids with waves of fun throughout Central Florida’s hottest months. The Orlando Sentinel has a link to many local Splash Pads, where you can read detailed information on locations throughout the area. Local libraries offer summer reading programs. Most have individual programs for preschoolers, kids, teens and adults. Specifics vary by library. Many give opportunities for children to win small prizes after completing the program. This is a wonderful way to set reading goals for children as they continue to learn and enhance their capabilities. In addition to summer reading programs, libraries offer additional story times and craft options for free or low cost.

Here in Central Florida, we have numerous opportunities to take advantage of fun places to go during the summer. In addition to the above, children may find craft classes enjoyable. Michael’s arts and crafts store hosts several classes throughout the year. Parents can also look into local community pools, playgrounds, town events, camps, and local YMCA’s for endless options. Enjoy the rest of your summer! And remember to use appropriate sunscreen whenever you make outdoor plans, even on cloudy days!
